or music B-boy PREhistory (past–1973) - Before the birth of bboying, there had to have been a conception period. And its during this conception leading up to its birth that contains much history of other street dance genres too...such as the funk styles. And dance battling did not originate with bboying.
1907:
Vaudeville & silent film star Fred Stone performs a rolling maneuver off his shoulders in the 8-second black-&-white film DANCING BOXING MATCH (by Winthrop Moving Picture Co). This maneuver is called a "Coin Drop", and will be popularized through bboying over 7 decades later.
1927:
After nearly a decade of development, the swing dance style (specifically the breakaway) popularized at the Savoy dance club now gets the name, by Shorty George Snowden, "Lindy Hop"...which is a precursor to Hip Hop. Shorty gives the name when a reporter comes to him the same night he's dancing in a marathon contest (at Manhattan Casino, 155th Street off 8th Ave, Harlem, NYC) and asks him what that dance he's doing. The name is based on a newspaper headline describing Charles Lindbergh's TransAtlantic plane flight on 5/20/1927.
